Vitor Lopes makes new friends as champion as Net winners offered glimpse into future
When Rebecca Hudson, who won the Telegraph Junior Golf Championship girls’ trophy three times in the nineties, reminisced last year of playing alongside former winner Justin Rose at the 1997 event, little did she realise how important the event would be for her career. “It stands you in such good stead for the future,” she said. “There are not many tournaments like these anymore. It’s not just a competition where golfers simply turn up.” So it was at the 2014 edition at Quinta do Lago’s superbly redesigned North Course. After another riveting 54-hole strokeplay tournament, it took some wondrous hitting from 18-year-old Vitor Lopes, Portugal’s No.1, to become the first European to win our junior Championship, in association with BMW.
